Dawn Welters Selected as Clerc Center Director of Instruction

The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center (Clerc Center) at Gallaudet University has announced the selection of Dawn A. Welters (DW) as the next Director of Instruction. She will begin her role on November 7, 2022.

DW brings to the Clerc Center nearly two decades of experience as a teacher and leader in deaf education and education management. Prior to joining the Clerc Center, DW worked as a Lead Teacher at D.C. Public Schools and was a Polk County Public schools teacher and department chair. She has also taught at South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind and the American School for the Deaf. DW also has extensive experience working as a Professional Learning Specialist at Apple, and provided guidance for the implementation of Apple technology at Gallaudet and the Clerc Center.

Marianne Belsky, the Chief Academic Officer of the Clerc Center, noted that “right away, DW stood out as an exceptional candidate, possessing a wide breadth of experience and knowledge that covered the duties and responsibilities required of an effective Director of Instruction at the Clerc Center. We are exceptionally pleased that she will be joining our leadership team in the work to further advance our national impact and outreach efforts and support for our two schools, Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) and Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD), as centers of educational innovation and excellence.”

DW is trained in educational and instructional technology and is an active member of the Consortium for School Network (CoSN), a professional association for school system technology leaders. DW is also the founder and owner of DEAFinite Educational Consulting, which has consulted for rural area schools with limited resources to provide quality deaf education to their students. It also supports families who need an educational advocate for their children.

This announcement comes after a fast and intensive search in which Clerc Center partnered with a Deaf-owned and led organizational and leadership development consulting firm, Innivee Strategies, Inc.

“On behalf of the Innivee Strategies team, we deeply appreciate the Clerc Center’s trust in our team as we supported their search for the next Director of Instruction,” said Innivee Strategies CEO Shane Feldman. “We look forward to seeing the positive results of DW’s influence and demonstrated leadership within the entire Clerc Center’s various national impact initiatives and programs and at KDES and MSSD.”
